A reference to John Bull, who first appeared as a satirical character in 1712 and was used to represent the strong, good-hearted, honest, good humored and patriotic Englishman.

Over the following 200 or more years the character matured and became an icon for the strengths of the nation, his size being seen as a sign of prosperity and good living. During WWII, John Bull was employed as a patriotic figure to rally morale and project national solidarity and resistance to the threat from overseas.

Water is the most important ingredient in beer, and Wells John Bull Finest Bitter has an enviable natural advantage over other bitters. Wells' bitters are uniquely brewed using pure mineral water from an independently accredited source; our own well.

John Bull uses the finest English 'Challenger' and 'East Kent Goldings' hops. Sampled by hand, only the most flavorsome part of the ripest hops are used, guaranteeing a distinct hop bitterness and tempting citrus fruit aroma. The English 'Crystal' malt is carefully crushed rather than ground. This helps to bring out the ?tang? of a traditional ?London-style? bitter and its golden tawny color.

Our Master Brewer insists on employing the ?Holy Brewing? method, fermenting these fine ingredients for a full 7 days, delivering the consistency and character that John Bull Bitter drinkers rightly demand and which reflect the timeless qualities of John Bull himself.

We take immeasurable pride in producing a thirst quenching bitter that can be savored on its own or with fine foods. A premium bitter that we are proud to associate with its namesake the famous British icon, John Bull.
