East County’s first real foray into craft beer bars comes with a nicotine kick. Hoffer’s 24 taps, excellent high-brow wine selection, and two walk-in humidors of tobacco-infused glory stand out in the middle of an otherwise sleepy La Mesa Village. While not a big beer drinker, proprietor Phil Hoffman knows his wine and his stogies, and at least knows enough about business to employ people who DO have a strong footing in craft beer. He’s also not afraid to take suggestions from the house for upcoming taps. You can always find him taking a long pull from a dark cigar with a glass of wine on the back patio/smoking area, which is likely where you’ll find yourself on a warm summer night, comforted by a Speedway Stout (on regular rotation here) and a glowing cherry at the end of your maduro. (PRO-TIP: The dark green–walled ambiance here always makes me feel like I should be in a suit ... so maybe wear a suit.

$5.00 16 oz American Brown Ale 5.0%
AleSmith Brewing Company, San Diego, CA
AleSmith’s interpretation of this classic English-style ale is smooth, dark, and rich. A variety of specialty malts produce a brilliant dark brown color and a wonderful malt complexity. A light dose of East Kent Goldings and Styrian Goldings hops from England balance the malt sweetness without adding bitterness to the flavor profile. Reintrodcued at AleSmith in 2002, Nut Brown Ale has quickly become one of our most popular beers.
$5.00 12 oz Belgian Golden Strong Ale 11.0%
AleSmith Brewing Company, San Diego, CA
This is the AleSmith incarnation of a Belgian Strong Ale. Horny Devil is an authentic Belgian Style ale, from the Belgian candi sugar right down to the yeast, a Belgian strain from a Trappist monastery in Belgium. In addition to the malts, candi sugar and fresh hops, there is also a little added twist from coriander seeds, which impart a refreshing citrus flavor to an outstanding ale. Belgian ale lovers around the world have raved about Horny Devil, and you will too. Bright straw/light yellow color and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Intriguingly complex.
A well-hopped American interpretation of the richest and strongest of the English ales. The hop character should be evident throughout, but does not have to be unbalanced. The alcohol strength and hop bitterness often combine to leave a very long finish.
$6.00 12 oz Imperial IPA 10.0%
Ballast Point Brewing Company, San Diego, CA
An intensely hoppy, very strong pale ale without the big maltiness and/or deeper malt flavors of an American barleywine. Strongly hopped, but clean, lacking harshness, and a tribute to historical IPAs. Drinkability is an important characteristic; not a heavy, sipping beer.
This hoppy American IPA is a full bodied beer brewed American pale and crystalmalts, and heavily hopped with Chinook, Cascade, Columbus and Centennial. There’s a trophy in every glass. 2009 Great American Beer Festival® American-Style Strong Pale Ale – GOLD; 2009 Colorado State Fair – Best of Show; 2006 Great American Beer Festival® American-Style Strong Pale Ale – SILVER; 2005 Great American Beer Festival® American-Style Strong Pale Ale – SILVER; 1999 Great American Beer Festival® India Pale Ale - GOLD

$6.00 10 oz English Barleywine 12.0%
Firestone Walker Brewing Company, Paso Robles, CA
The richest and strongest of the English Ales. A showcase of malty richness and complex, intense flavors. The character of these ales can change significantly over time; both young and old versions should be appreciated for what they are. The malt profile can vary widely; not all examples will have all possible flavors or aromas.

Refreshing and hoppy, yet with sufficient supporting malt.
$6.00 12 oz American Stout 10.0%
Karl Strauss Brewing Company, San Diego, CA
Aged three months in American oak barrels, the resulting brew is a dark, unblended, and richly flavored union of dark chocolate, espresso, and toasted oak.
An intensely hoppy, very strong pale ale without the big maltiness and/or deeper malt flavors of an American barleywine. Strongly hopped, but clean, lacking harshness, and a tribute to historical IPAs. Drinkability is an important characteristic; not a heavy, sipping beer.
A dark, very rich, complex, very strong Belgian ale. Complex, rich, smooth and dangerous.
A blend of Bourbon Barrel Aged Serpent’s Stout and Brandy Barrel Aged Angel’s Share. You see in Bourbon Barrel Aged Serpent’s Stout we have captured the essence of one very evil beer (the Devil’s brew if you will). Blacker than the strongest plague and hotter than Hades itself, there’s fire in this beer- a veritable cauldron of Bourbon infused beer. Left to its own devices, this would be one sinister liquid. Yet, we have tempered this odious darkness with heaven sent Saintly created Angel’s Share. And together, these two beers will work in harmony to deliver us on that day.
$5.00 16 oz Russian Imperial Stout 9.0%
North Coast Brewing Co., Fort Bragg, CA

$6.00 12 oz Russian Imperial Stout 10.5%
Port Brewing Company, San Marcos, CA
Originally shipped from London to the Czarist rulers of Russia, Imperial Stouts are stronger, richer and more robust versions of traditional stouts. The increase in alcohol content means that literally, many of these beers are a meal in a glass all on their own. Made from copious amounts of Roasted and Black Barleys, our stout invites you to share a silky black body with hints of freshly pulled espresso from the coffee house, melding with dark bitter sweet chocolate from a Belgian Chocolateer and the ash of a smoldering fire on a dark winters night. Just remember that somewhere out there, the jolly old fat man is making a list and checking it twice. He knows who’s been naughty and nice… Might we suggest that you forgo the Milk with the cookies this year and leave him of bottle of something incredibly nice- Say like Santa’s Little Helper? Mrs. Claus would probably like some as well. That is if Rudolph doesn’t drink it all himself. Bad Reindeer.
