La Jolla’s beer scene has long been dominated by the Karl Strauss brewpub, but the La Jolla Brew House has stepped up their game and is going head-to-head for brewpub domination in this tony, unincorporated burg. First, they hired Travis Smith from Russian River and The Bruery to serve as head brewer; when he departed, they found Matt Akin—formerly of Alesmith—for the position. The Brew House ain’t playin’ beanbag. As for the setting, simple, beachy wood benches and tables, an easy-drinking 10 taps, a pet-friendly setting, and the surfer drawl of the servers really set a tone that seems much closer to Pacific Beach than upscale-and-touristy La Jolla. It’s a great spot to watch a game and imbibe one of their perfectly balanced house brews—in particular, their Fleabite Pale Ale.
