From the gothic chandeliers over the bar to the black-and-white posters of the Ramones, this place defines cool. Located in University Heights, Small Bar dons an impressive 42 taps, featuring a variety of American craft beers with special nods to the West Coast and to Belgian brews. And the food? Delicious. The biscuits with hop sausage gravy is a beer-lover’s dream, and the Guinness mac and cheese is the best brew-based dish this side of anywhere. Be sure to check out their meal-in-a-glass Brunch Bloody Mary. It's the stuff of legends, complete with a litany of accoutrements, including bacon and pork rinds. If you like it quiet, go in the afternoons. If you like the scene, check them out on weekend nights and Sunday brunch.
10:00AM-2:00PM The much anticipated arrival of Saint Archer Brewing Co. is upon us for Beer For Breakfast. Featured on tap: IPA, Pale Ale, and Kolsch. Also featuring IPA fresh from the cask! An intensely flavored, big, dark ale. Roasty, fruity, and bittersweet, with a noticeable alcohol presence. Dark fruit flavors meld with roasty, burnt, or almost tar-like sensations. Like a black barleywine with every dimension of flavor coming into play.
Very refreshing and thirst quenching.
Refreshing and hoppy, yet with sufficient supporting malt.
A fairly substantial English dark ale with restrained roasty characteristics.
Low gravity, low alcohol levels and low carbonation make this an easy-drinking beer. Some examples can be more malt balanced, but this should not override the overall bitter impression. Drinkability is a critical component of the style; emphasis is still on the bittering hop addition as opposed to the aggressive middle and late hopping seen in American ales.
Deep amber color. Distinctive flavor. Rich history. Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called kräusening.
Flanders Brown Ale/Oud Bruin 5.5%
Brouwerij Bockor N.V., Bellegem-Kortrijk, Belgium
A malty, fruity, aged, somewhat sour Belgian-style brown ale.
Strongly resembles a Strong Golden Ale but slightly darker and somewhat fuller-bodied. Usually has a more rounded malt flavor but should not be sweet.
A refreshing, medium to strong fruity/spicy ale with a distinctive yellow-orange color, highly carbonated, well hopped, and dry with a quenching acidity.
Belgian Golden Strong Ale 6.8%
Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat, Breendonk-Puurs, Belgium
Created by the Moortgat family, bottled Duvel is one of Belgium’s favorite ales. The secret of its success lies in using only best-quality ingredients, and in the well-balanced, very specific, complex brewing and refermentation process that takes over 90 days. After brewing and first fermentation – which takes about 30 days – the beer is tasted by the brewmaster and his staff. At this stage this beer is called “single-fermented.” Typical Duvel flavors and aromas are already emerging, but the beer is lower in alcohol and carbonation, and the taste is slightly lighter and crisper.
Refreshing and hoppy, yet with sufficient supporting malt.
Davy Brown Ale is a deep, caramel beer that combines wonderful roasted malt, light chocolate flavor, and a blend of Northern and Cascade hops. Named after a Santa Ynez Valley pioneer, this beer is a true discovery-both rustic and refined.
A golden, complex, effervescent, strong Belgian-style ale.
A menagerie of hops is layered throughout the brewing process: Simcoe for unique fruitiness and grapefruit zest, Columbus for strong hop pungency, Centennial for pine and citrus notes and Cascade for floral aroma. A multi-dimensional hop experience.
A decidedly hoppy and bitter, moderately strong American pale ale.
This is a premium example of the classic German Pilsner. Clean, crisp and refreshing, the Elemental Pilsner is pleasantly full-bodied. Generous use of German noble hops provides this beer with a complex hop presence with a dry and slightly bitter finish. A bright white, lacey head tops off this award-winning session beer.
A dark German lager that balances roasted yet smooth malt flavors with moderate hop bitterness.
Refreshing wheat or rye beers that can display more hop character and less yeast character than their German cousins.
Complex, fruity, pleasantly sour/acidic, balanced, pale, wheat-based ale fermented by a variety of Belgian microbiota. A lambic with fruit, not just a fruit beer.
We tend to do things a little differently here at Ritual, so when the call came in to make a new style Red ale, we immediately deferred to the full-flavored segment of the taste spectrum. We certainly didn’t skimp on the malts (after all, we used eight different varieties), giving this beer a multi-layered complexity of caramel and toffee.
Like an American pale ale with more body, more caramel richness, and a balance more towards malt than hops (although hop rates can be significant).
A clean, crisp, delicately balanced beer usually with very subtle fruit flavors and aromas. Subdued maltiness throughout leads to a pleasantly refreshing tang in the finish.
A decidedly hoppy and bitter, moderately strong American pale ale.
A moderate-strength golden ale that has a subtle Belgian complexity, slightly sweet flavor, and dry finish.
American Pale Ale 6.7%
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Chico, CA
Refreshing and hoppy, yet with sufficient supporting malt.
Tons of roasted/charred malt, bittersweet chocolate, espresso bean and wet earth notes. Ends in's burnt chocolate/ dark roast coffee note. Mouthfeel is smooth and velvety without ever really showing the ABV. Really nicely done. Make sure you like them really dark before you touch this one.
White grape with mango, nectarine, gooseberry, and lightly spicy grapefruit. The fruit is mouthwatering and juicy. Apparently blending Nelson and Citra makes for an awesome flavor. Smooth moderate bitterness. Malt is crackery and lightly biscuity. The beer is dry with no alcohol flavor. Bitterness waxes in the finish.
A very dark, roasty, bitter, creamy ale.
A harmonious marriage of ingredients, processes and beer. The key attributes of the underlying style (if declared) will be atypical due to the addition of special ingredients or techniques; do not expect the base beer to taste the same as the unadulterated version.
